Borders Stonecrest Presents "In the Studio" Artists in the
April Charlotte Songwriter Showcase
On Saturday, April 24th at 3 p.m., Borders Books and Music at Stonecrest
will host its seventh monthly songwriter showcase. This months theme
is In the Studio; all of the performers are at work in a local
recording studio. The event will feature live performances by Jason Hausman,
Ruth McCormack, and Mike Shannon with Chick Tsikouras. The event highlights
Borders commitment to supporting NSAI and local music.
Charlotte Observer's Tonya Jameson recently wrote: "Charlotte's
4th Ward spins pop melodies into an infectious blend of alternative rock".
Mike Shannon and Chick Tsikouras pen 4th Ward's material. Creative Loafing's
Tim Davis referred to the group's tunes as being "original without
trying to be trendy." 4th Ward formed in 2000 and has played throughout
the Southeast--opening for Hootie and the Blowfish and Angie Aparo. Their
self-titled 2000 release ranked #20 of the top 200 adds on the National
CMJ charts. "The album of the day. Imaginative and well crafted",
wrote Dominick Miserandino of Celebrity Cafe. The group is currently in
the studio, working with Smithereen alumnus and current Spongetone Jamie
Hoover. The upcoming summer release, to be called "Big Dream Baby",
promises to feature a unique blend of new music.
Ruth McCormack
Ruth McCormack has been singing since she was a child and wrote her first
complete song when she was about 12. Ruth has a very eclectic taste when
it comes to music: she sings contemporary Christian music, musical theatre,
and has extensive training in opera and art song. She actually started
out as a pianist, and she currently teaches voice and piano. Ruth has
lived in Charlotte for 5 years and has been more actively writing music
in the past 3years. Shes currently recording her first release.
She's been co-writing with fellow NSAI member Allan Kaplan for the past
six months or so: they actually met at a Borders/NSAI Showcase and are
developing a compelling musical partnership.
From the sprawling fields of Indiana to the rich red clay of North Carolina,
Jason Hausman rises to the forefront with intricate lyric, haunting voice,
and relevant art. His guitar-driven songs are described as beautiful,
deliciously gritty, and haunting. Hausman has
incredible experiences as a young musician, playing with the likes of
Ben Folds Five, Herbie Mann, Athenaeum, and Blessid Union of Souls. Jason
formed and fronted numerous collectives of talent such as Blue Mongoose,
The Hausman Syndicate (under Rockduster Records), Lovehaus, and Godmanradio.
His latest release, hollow, is a powerful blend of innovative sounds and
classic songwriting. Hausman currently lives, works, and writes in Charlotte.
He is the general manager of an established recording studio and is also
a skilled recording engineer/composer.
