Borders Stonecrest Presents Veterans, Voice Overs, and Volunteers in the February Charlotte Songwriter Showcase

On Saturday, February 28th at 3 p.m., Borders Books and Music at Stonecrest will host its fifth monthly songwriter showcase. This month's theme is "Veterans, Voice Overs, and Volunteers". The event will feature live performances by David Griffin (a veteran of the stage and the armed services), Casey Conerly (a voice-over personality), and Bruce Johnson (the most active volunteer in Charlotte's songwriting groups). The event highlights Border's commitment to supporting NSAI and local music. The February 28th show features the following performers:

David Griffin

David Griffin fulfills many roles: husband, father, songwriter, musician, thespian, and casual hero. David has a wife Cathy, 6 children, cool '64 Ford, nice guitar collection, and few worries. After retiring after 23 years from the US Army as a Master Sergeant, David currently teaches Automotive Technology at The Applied Technology Center in Rock Hill, SC. David is probably as well known locally for years of theater performances as for his music. He won his first talent contest in 1956. He's never seen a crowd he couldn't get a laugh out of.

David's recent milestones as an entertainer include opening for Leon Redbone, Kevin Welch, and Rock Hill favorites 4 on the Floor. Moments of pride include being invited to perform in the songwriters showcase at the famous Blue Bird Cafe in Nashville, TN, and having a local television station do a documentary around a song he wrote, using his music for the entire show. His next goal is to co-write a song with either Toby Keith or Tim McGraw.

Casey Conerly

Casey Conerly's love of words, combined with her love of music, spurred her to pick up her guitar again after fifteen years. (What was she doing all that time?) Anyway, she's back to telling stories in song. Stories we can all relate to. Well, we can relate to most of them. There is the stalker story….but, hey, it does have a catchy beat and you can dance to it. But most of all she writes about love and hope. She says songwriting is better than therapy.
Casey's first songwriting influence was Jackson Browne. She couldn't decide if she wanted to marry him or be him, so she just named her son after him. Other musical influences include Emmy Lou Harris, Gillian Welch, and Patty Griffin. Professionally, Casey is a public relations practitioner and writes for a living. She also lends her voice to radio and television ads and phone system messaging. She likes to mix things up a bit. It keeps life interesting. And it keeps those stories coming…

Bruce Johnson

Bruce Johnson, Charlotte NSAI coordinator, is a singer/songwriter who has been a member of NSAI since 1999. He is part of a four piece band (Second Wind) in Charlotte that does a mix of covers and originals. Three of the band members are also NSAI members. He is a co-founder of the Song Finishers co-writing group and on the Advisory Board of the Tosco Music Parties Inc. He hosts the monthly "The Naked Truth" Songwriters Showcase at The Evening Muse. If he's not sitting down writing a song, or helping to plan the next NSAI workshop, he's probably out jamming with friends or at an open mic somewhere.
