Cotton Gin Tavern Gig on 4/24/2004Date: Saturday, April 24, 2004 It's been a long time since I've played a small town bar like the Cotton Gin Tavern in York, SC. I'd obviously forgotten what it was like to live in such a small town. Shame on me! This gig did wonders to remind me of my teenage days of playing private parties in the outskirts of Lenior County, NC. I played suprisingly well, considering I'd added a bunch of tunes to my set...and I also did a pretty good job of reaching out to the audience...but I had a very hard time getting them out of their chairs. Eventually, however, my free drinks and funk and roll prevailed...and I added several people to my mailing list...I also made a couple of new friends. (Most notably, the ex-military bartender who gave me the lay of the land (and the "this is York" speech..) Also, I met a millionaire ex-kickboxing champion who spends his days teaching kickboxing and boxing to "lost souls"...and his evenings nursing his knuckles and smoking cigars at the Cotton Gin... I have to give props to the Cotton Gin dancers who took what Tracey and I like to call "the front bumpy thing" dance to a whole new level...As fellow songwriter David Griffin, commented: "they need a brass pole in here". Thanks to all who came and partook...
