NSAI/Border's Songwriter Showcase

Date: Saturday, May 22, 2004
Location: Borders Books and Music Stonecrest, Charlotte, NC
Purpose: Borders/NSAI May Songwriter Showcase
Theme: Songwriter's with an Edge

Well, I've played my last Border's Songwriter Showcase! Well--at least, it was the last one that I'll be promoting for the group. With my busy schedule getting busier, I've had to pass my duties onto someone else. I've decided to clear some time to focus on writing some new material.

This monthly event at Border's Books and music in Stonecrest in Charlotte, NC is sponsored by Border's and NSAI. NSAI (the Nashville Songwriter's Association International) is the world's largest songwriting organization. I'm a member of the very active Charlotte chapter...and, as such, I help organize the event every month. May marks our eighth month, and I volunteered to play. The theme this month was "Songwriters with an Edge".

This month featured performances by Allan Kaplan and Seth Boulton. Allan is a regular at NSAI meetings, and he's a really great guitar player. I met Seth at Barbara Cloyd's Songwriter Search, and I love his quirky approach to songwriting.

I went on second and felt like I put on a pretty decent show. I "cleaned up" Motha Funky so that it was suitable for the small kids who were milling around...but I think my spoken word piece shocked a few of the folks who hadn't heard me perform it before. I managed to have a few folks climb out from behind the magazines during my funky bits to nod and bob their heads, while my friend Garry spent the time trying to contain his expresso habit. Afterwards, I spoke with a couple of fans who were really into what I was doing.

I was suprised to see a friend (and former guitar "student") of mine (Jamie Nickerson) show up. He was back from college, and looking totally like a rock star. I can't wait to hear him play now.

Best of luck to all the Border's coordinators--thanks for the ride!
